The dead cannot hear

Here is a full essay based on Rafakut Ali’s Qur’an-based view that the dead cannot hear:

The Dead Cannot Hear — Rafakut Ali’s Qur’anic View

Introduction

Rafakut Ali, a contemporary Qur’an-centric thinker and writer, advocates for a return to the pure message of the Qur’an, free from traditional dogma and inherited religious myths. Among his many reformative positions, he firmly rejects the widespread Muslim belief that the dead — whether saints, prophets, peers, sheikhs or relatives — can hear, respond to, or intercede for the living. According to Rafakut Ali, this notion is contrary to Qur’anic truth and is rooted in cultural superstition rather than divine revelation. His position reaffirms that only God is the Hearer of all things (As-Samī‘) and that dependence on the dead is a deviation from true monotheism (tawḥīd).

The Qur’an’s Explicit Declaration

Rafakut Ali bases his understanding entirely on Qur’anic verses that explicitly deny the living’s ability to communicate with the dead. He frequently cites verses such as:

“You cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call when they turn their backs and retreat.”
(Qur’an 27:80; 30:52)

and

“Nor are equal the living and the dead. Indeed, God causes whom God wills to hear, but you cannot make those in the graves hear.”
(Qur’an 35:22)

In these verses, Rafakut Ali sees no ambiguity. The Qur’an draws a clear line between life and death: once a soul departs the body, it loses all sensory function and awareness of the living world. Hearing, seeing, and perception end at death. The dead cannot receive prayers, respond to calls, or bless the living. These verses, he argues, were revealed to correct the same superstitions that had infected pre-Islamic Arab belief — the veneration of ancestors and the invocation of the dead for help.

Literal and Metaphorical Dimensions

While accepting the literal meaning — that the dead physically cannot hear — Rafakut Ali also points to the metaphorical depth in these verses. The “dead” can also refer to those who are spiritually lifeless: people who refuse to listen to divine guidance even while alive. In both senses, the message remains the same — the deafness to truth is both physical in death and moral in disbelief. Thus, when the Qur’an says the Prophet cannot make the dead hear, it emphasizes that human messengers cannot awaken hearts closed to God, let alone communicate with those physically deceased.

Rejection of Grave Worship and Intercession

Rafakut Ali categorically rejects practices such as grave visitation for supplication, asking deceased saints for blessings, or seeking intercession through prophets or spiritual figures. In his analysis, these acts are forms of hidden shirk (idolatry) — attributing divine hearing and power to those who possess none.

He refers to the Qur’anic statement:

“Say: To God belongs all intercession.” (Qur’an 39:44)

and argues that believing anyone other than God can intercede undermines the very foundation of Islam.
For him, the Prophet Muhammad was a messenger, not a mediator. After his death, his duty was fulfilled; he has no continuing control or awareness of earthly affairs. To pray “through” him or any other deceased figure is, in Rafakut Ali’s words, a betrayal of Qur’anic tawḥīd.

Death as the End of Earthly Awareness

Rafakut Ali further supports his position with the Qur’an’s teaching that death separates the soul from worldly perception until the Day of Resurrection. The verse:

“Behind them is a barrier (barzakh) until the Day they are resurrected.” (Qur’an 23:100)

describes this state — barzakh — as a complete separation between the living and the dead. The deceased cannot return, observe, or interact with the living. They are held in waiting, unaware of worldly events. To Rafakut Ali, this verse nullifies the popular idea that the dead are aware of visitors at their graves or that they can hear recitations made in their memory.

Thus, communication with the dead is not only futile — it is a distortion of the Qur’an’s depiction of death.

Dependence Only on the Living God

For Rafakut Ali, the practical and spiritual message of these verses is liberation: a believer’s connection must be with God alone, not through intermediaries, relics, or graves. He emphasizes the verse:

“You alone we worship; You alone we ask for help.” (Qur’an 1:5)

This verse, repeated in every unit of prayer, encapsulates pure monotheism. Any form of calling upon the dead contradicts it. The Living, Everlasting God (Al-Ḥayy, Al-Qayyūm) alone hears all prayers. To believe otherwise is to place creation alongside the Creator — the very essence of shirk.

Moral and Spiritual Implications

In rejecting the idea that the dead can hear, Rafakut Ali also exposes a deeper moral decay: humanity’s tendency to escape personal responsibility by seeking intermediaries. Rather than turning inward for repentance and reform, people turn outward to graves and saints. He calls this spiritual laziness — an attempt to outsource one’s connection to God.
The Qur’an, in contrast, commands direct accountability: every soul is individually answerable to God, with no helper or intercessor between.

Conclusion

Rafakut Ali’s Qur’an-based position that the dead cannot hear is not merely a theological statement; it is a call to restore the purity of monotheism. His view demolishes centuries of myth built around saints, shrines, and spiritual hierarchies. By grounding his reasoning entirely in the Qur’an, he reminds believers that life and consciousness belong to God alone, and that all communication, worship, and dependence must be directed solely toward Him.
In essence, the living must seek the Living — for the dead hear nothing, know nothing, and can do nothing.
