Salah Is Not a Shield — Taqwa Is By Rafakut Ali

Subtitle: A Qur’anic Reflection on Prayer, Evil, and God-Consciousness—

Introduction

Across the Muslim world, prayer (salah) is often regarded as a protective ritual — a spiritual armour against sin. Many believe that by performing the five daily prayers, one automatically earns divine protection and moral purity. Yet the Qur’an, when read without inherited interpretations, reveals a far more profound truth. According to Rafakut Ali, salah is not a guarantee of righteousness. It is a reminder that must awaken taqwa — the inner consciousness of God. Without this awareness, prayer becomes motion without meaning. The Qur’an’s message is clear: it is taqwa, not ritual, that shields the believer from evil. God-Cognizance i.e taqwa can only be learned and developed and nurtured by understanding verses of The Quran – God’s words.

1. The Misunderstood Purpose of Salah

Salah is a divine institution, but not for God’s benefit — for ours. It is designed to awaken remembrance, reflection, and restraint.> “Indeed, prayer restrains from immorality and wrongdoing — and the remembrance of God is greater.” (Al-‘Ankabut 29:45) Most read this verse as proof that prayer prevents sin. Yet, as Rafakut Ali explains, the restraint does not come from the performance of prayer but from the remembrance of God born within it. The verse itself declares: “and the remembrance of God is greater.”When salah becomes habitual and hollow — performed by the tongue while the heart is absent — it loses its purpose. The Qur’an warns against those who “pray only to be seen” (Al-Ma‘un 107:4–6), reminding that ritual without sincerity breeds hypocrisy, not holiness.

2. The Real Shield: God-Consciousness (Taqwa)

The Qur’an repeatedly affirms that the only real protection from evil is taqwa — the vigilant awareness of God’s presence in every thought and act.

“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for the God-conscious (muttaqun).” (Al-Baqarah 2:2)

Taqwa, not ritual performance, is the condition for guidance and divine protection. It is not fear in the emotional sense but spiritual alertness — the constant mindfulness that one stands before God in every moment.

Rafakut Ali writes:> “Salah is an exercise — taqwa is the strength. One without the other is form without force.”

He contrasts the optic Muslim, who appears devout in ritual, with the God-conscious believer, whose morality flows from sincerity and reflection upon the Qur’an. It is the latter who finds true protection, for God guards the God-conscious — not the ritualist.—

3. When Salah Becomes Ritual, Not Remembrance

The Qur’an condemns those who perform prayer absent of humility and meaning:> “So woe to those who pray, yet are heedless of their prayer.” (Al-Ma‘un 107:4–5)Rafakut Ali interprets this as a warning that mechanical worship may actually increase heedlessness when detached from understanding. Prayer that does not reform conduct is no prayer at all.He writes:> “Salah without comprehension is choreography — standing, bowing, and prostrating before the unknown. Understanding the Qur’an is greater than performing rituals one does not understand.”

Thus, the Qur’an calls believers not merely to perform salah, but to let it transform them — to make every act of worship a reflection of taqwa.—

4. The Qur’anic Model: Remembering God ConstantlyWhile salah is a structured form of remembrance, the Qur’an commands a remembrance that extends beyond fixed moments:> “Remember your Lord within yourself, humbly and in reverence, morning and evening, and do not be among the heedless.” (Al-A‘raf 7:205)Rafakut Ali observes that remembrance (dhikr) is the essence of all worship. Salah is one expression of dhikr, but dhikr itself is not confined to salah. The true believer remembers God not five times a day, but with every breath. Therefore, salah is the training ground; taqwa is the battlefield. It is in daily life — in choices, speech, and intention — that taqwa proves its power as a shield from evil.—

5. Taqwa as Protection: The Divine Law of Cause and Effect

God promises protection to those who are mindful of Him:> “Indeed, God is with those who are mindful of Him and those who do good.” (An-Nahl 16:128)“Whoever has taqwa of God — He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.” (At-Talaq 65:2–3)

These verses show that taqwa is a living covenant, a cause that invites divine help and moral clarity. It is not a passive emotion but an active discipline — a way of thinking and being that keeps one aligned with justice.Salah is meant to cultivate this state, but if it fails to do so, it becomes an empty ritual. Thus, taqwa — not the performance of prayer — is the ultimate defence against evil.—

6. Reforming Our Understanding of Worship

Rafakut Ali challenges the modern Muslim to reform the understanding of worship. He argues that a community immersed in ritual yet distant from moral conscience cannot claim divine favour.

“God protects the God-conscious — not those who pray mechanically or dress as Muslims,” Rafakut writes.

True religion begins when the heart reforms. The external must reflect the internal; otherwise, it is hypocrisy dressed as devotion. The Qur’an demands moral transformation, not ritual repetition.—ConclusionThe Qur’an does not promise protection through salah itself. The protection lies in the taqwa that salah should produce.

Prayer is a means, not the end — a reminder, not a shield.

Rafakut Ali’s insight pierces centuries of ritualism:> “Salah without taqwa is a body without spirit. The real prayer is the awakened conscience that remembers God even when the lips are silent.”

Therefore, the believer’s safety lies not in motion but in mindfulness — not in outward display, but in inner awareness.

Salah may begin the journey, but taqwa completes it.—
